Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. Have choice to send email as plain text

When I have it send email to my text service it's HTML, which obviously makes the text msg very large. Allow choice to send alerts via plain text.

  2. Desktop notifications

Desktop notifications would have (at least) 2 advantages:

    1) It would give much quicker access to the critical alert information than a regular alert email, since you could layout/format the notification with perfect flexibility (as opposed to default email client notifications which devote most of the real estate to the "from" address, and subject and body in plain text)

    2) With a couple buttons, the notification could give immediate access to actions such as "clear" or "mark as read"

  3. comment markdown

CONTEXT: I use comments on alerts raised by SQL Monitor to document root cause of the triggered condition and resolution action.

PROBLEM: Comments only support plain-text. When creating/reviewing comments, it's often useful to add links for more detailed descriptions of the cause of the alerts, and links to ticketing systems for resolution steps. Simplified bulleting/numbering and bold/italicized text would also be helpful for breaking up monotonous text.

EXAMPLE SOLUTIONS: Add Markdown (http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/) support to addition/review of comments. A couple implementations for examples of usage:

  4. Have a free-text notes field for each server\instance

A notes field can be used for any useful information such as business contacts, service hours or documentation links, etc.

  5. Traceflag 1222 for deadlocks

Use traceflag 1222 for deadlocks when monitoring SQL 2005+, and keep 1204 just for SQL 2000 instances. 1222 gives so much more information and doesn't cut off the SQL text.

  6. Search through (closed) alerts for a string.

It would be great if we could search closed alerts for a string. For example I want to see all the alerts that have included a particular view in the query text.

(Also include comments in the search)

  7. Analysis parsing of dates and multiple baselines using a text input search

Allow the analysis and other date filters to provide the option to paste and try parsing the date based on matching common patterns (maybe even allowing user to define options in config file).

For example, the standard SQL datetime2(0) of yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss pasted would convert to the date it parses.

Maybe even consider taking a page from the freaking great design Simple Bank has started applying which is a text based filter applying friendly syntax. I have found this incredibly useful.

They let you type in the search filter

    "last 3 months"
    "last week"
    "date:1/1/2015-1/15/2015"
    "date:1/1/15-1/15/15"

    and it immediate updates…

  8. Add free-format text when emailing an Alert

When I email a DEADLOCK to a team member familiar with, or responsible for, the functional area, for them to get a "blind" DEADLOCK email, bearing no introductory narrative, saying nothing about frequency, or suggesting that mitigation code be added where known to not be present, means I have to email to myself, compose the extras, and forward.

The ability to add a header-block to the email, with a polite sign-off, is more likely to engage, than for the recipient to have to start asking unnecessary questions.

  9. Add Text Boxes/Areas to Reports

I have reports that I circulate from SQL Monitor. I have to edit these before I issue them to add additional information. E.g. Under the "Lock Waits/Sec" chart I have a description of what a "Lock Wait" is, what impact it has, what's an acceptable value, etc. I tried supplying a supplementary sheet with this info but the management team prefer it under each chart / metric.

  11. deadlock frame procname text missing final character

The SQL displayed under the frame procname for a deadlock is missing the final character of the SQL.
    e.g: and #ttable.StartDate is nul
    Should be
    and #ttable.StartDate is null

  12. Improved view of User Sessions

Visibility into user sessions could be improved. The current list on the instance overview, "SQL User Processes (Top 10)", is a start but needs the following to make it useful:

    1) Don't limit the number of sessions shown; rather add paging controls like on the error log view, so that it would be possible to see any session for any selected time period
    2) Add a columns for:
    - Login (i.e. login name)
    - Blocked by session Id (maybe even an icon if a session is blocking/blocked?)
    3) Make it possible to sort by any column
    4) Add ability to…

  14. Search SQL Monitor Long Running Query Alerts By User Running Query

It would be very useful to search the Long Running Query alerts for a user? The alert text that is displayed in the GUI and in the alert emails list the user running the query. I have Monitor set up to only send the alert emails for my HIGH category. But, when I want to do analysis or documentation, I would love to find all of the alerts Low, Med or High, that are attributed to a specific user or a group of users. Is that possible? To filter the list in the UI to only show alerts from a…

  15. Add database changes details based on the zoom range

In the "Databases" section when selecting one, we would like to have a list of the database changes that happened based on the "zoom range" period.

Right now I'm thinking based on the SQL Server error log

    Example:
    1 - Database Status changed. Online/Offline/Read-Only/Read-Write/etc
2 - Compatibility Level changed - This will be great to co-relate some situations with the CL change.
    3 - Page Verify
    Etc

In the end, any message that uses any of these texts:
    SELECT * FROM sys.messages
    WHERE text like '%Setting database%'

    This includes query store changes

  16. Add number of alerts to browser tab

I always have SQL Monitor open as one of the tabs on my browser (Chrome). What might be useful is to change the text of the tab (only when it is set to Global Overview) to include the number of alerts (unread or uncleared I'm not sure.....) - much like if you have Gmail inbox open, then any unread items make the tab text "Gmail - inbox (1)'

  17. Regarding Custom Metrics - allow us to either have the "Description" inserted into the email or give us another text field for annotating.

We have solution documents in a help desk application. I would like to have my error message emailed with a suggestion that the recepient reference the solution document for steps in resolving the problem.

SQL Monitor V 3.3. has now released. This release contains improved subject lines and message bodies of alert emails to help you quickly understand problems before logging in to SQL Monitor. For custom alert, emails now include description.

    Thanks,
    SQL Monitor Development Team

  18. Add multiple actions for alerts based on different conditions

It would be nice to be able to configure different actions for the same alert based on different criteria.

For example, with the SQL Job failure alert - It would be very useful to be able to have these alerts go to X email address if the job contains "DBA" in the job name, and the alert go to Y email address if the job doesn't contain that text in the job name (This is just a basic example, being able to configure multiple of these types of filters would be the goal).

    Right now the only possible…

  19. deadlock Detailed Report

Please create a detailed deadlock report.
In addition to the existing DeadLock summary report, can you please create a DeadLock Detailed report for all deadlocks for a given time range.
Looking for a DETAILED report of deadlocks (all deadlocks for the time range) that will include:
    1. Date / Time of the event
    2. Blocking SPID and full query text
    3. Duration of the block
    3. All Child or deadlock victim SPID and full query text of the victim

  20. Add filtering to the Top 10 Queries/Waits lists

So first, this is a request for more general filtering than the 2 requests I see already exist for filtering by database (which I believe you can get to by clicking the database name further down the page, but would certainly be more convenient on the top 10 lists directly).

The primary use case that I was looking to do but couldn't was sort by averages, but set a minimum execution count. The goal being to find my worst queries that are not just one off things that aren't likely to be repeated. I think there would be a LOT…
