Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. Use the Base Monitor Service account to query Active Directory when using AD Credentials

We are using a Managed Service Account to run SQL Monitor so we don't have to manage passwords. However we still need to have a regular domain account to query AD because there is no option other than to specify a username and password.

What would be great is to have an option to use the base monitor service account to query AD instead of having to specify a username and password.

This would work in a similar way to what already exists when setting up credentials for the server you monitor, where you can choose to connect to…

  2. When a custom metrics targets specific databases then only those database should be listed on the Analysis tab

Currently a custom metric is listed in the left most list box and the databases are in the right most. Some custom metrics are specific to a single database or a specific group of databases.

In either of these cases the database list in the last list box could be filtered to be only the databases that the metric relates to. This would save clicks and shorten the time taken to get to view the analysis trace.

  3. Exclude offline databases from backup alerts

Exclude all offline data bases from the overdue backup alert as we do not have a need to backup an offline data base. For us if a data base is taken offline it's most likely because its been migrated to another server or no longer needed and will eventually be deleted.

  4. Monitoring error (SQL Server data collection) - SAVE THE ERROR LOG

When one of these occurs it is 99.999% likely that, in the middle of the night, I will NOT jump out of bed, fire up the laptop, connect to the SQL Monitor Server and look at the SQL Monitor Error Log IN THE 5 MINUTES I HAVE BEFORE THE ENTRY IS LOST! May I cite the "Description" tab in SQL Monitor: "If the alert is still Active, or it Ended within the last five minutes, you can find out more information about its cause..." So we, ANYONE THAT IS, has a mere FIVE MINUTES to react to this before…

  5. Monitor Disk Overallocation

Recently we ran into disk space issues on a server. Looking into that, it was discovered that a 10TB database had 3TB in "Unused" space. That is the space was allocated to a table, but the table needed to be reorganized to recover the space. sp_spaceused shows this space, and a disk report of top tables clearly showed the Unused space. This was not something that Redgate noticed. Going back over our estate, we discovered there were more such databases where we could recover space. This could also be noted at an individual file level. Reorganizing that one database…

  6. Create an alert that triggers when receiving only partial telemetry from a server

I have a situation where Redgate Monitor is sometimes not receiving telemetry from the server OS. This occurred sporadically for several weeks until I had to open the server's detailed information, where I discovered the missing telemetry. The monitor triggered no alerts during those weeks despite it being caused by crashing windows services.

I've attached a screenshot that shows the missing telemetry for CPU and memory, caused by the perfmon service timing out and crashing.

After opening a ticket I was informed that there are no alert conditions in the monitor to detect this situation. This seems like a…

  7. Allow option to exclude Integrity Check Overdue Alert for read only databases

An alert configuration option should allow
a database status to be checked when querying for last good integrity checks and read_only databases could be excluded from the alert. Even when integrity checks are performed on read only databases, the last checked date is not updated resulting in unnecessary alerts in most cases.

  8. Monitor Azure SQL DWH

It'd be great to be able to monitor performance of queries on Azure SQL DWH, as there are a number of DMV's available to track usage. Also, the ability to see on the Dashboard what DWU level the Azure DWH instance is running on would raise value and awareness of the cost of it, at that point.

  9. Remove dropped database from Configuration>Monitored servers

I would like to be able to delete a database from Configuration>Monitored servers, if that database has been dropped from the monitored SQL server.
As it stands now, if a database has been dropped, I have to remove it manually from the RedGateSQLMonitor database via script.

    completed  ·  Neil Turner responded

Thanks for this suggestion. SQL Monitor 10 now allows teams to suppress alerts, or just their notifications, over certain periods using alert suppression windows. Multiple windows can be set-up. Please see What’s New in SQL Monitor 10 for more details (https://www.red-gate.com/hub/product-learning/sql-monitor/whats-new-in-sql-monitor-10).

We hope this meets requirements and will mark it as completed. Please raise further suggestions for any improvements you would like to see.

    Thanks,

    SQL Monitor product team

  12. Stop being nagged about maintenance windows - because they don't fit our operation

We don't have regular maintenance windows. Getting a nagging remainder about setting maintenance windows every login is very annoying. I'm currently running SQL Monitor 8.0.16.15996.

Yes, I know that this has been raised before but that particular question has been "closed".

  13. Send alert notifications at the central/parent base monitor

Context: We have a base monitor at our office connected to one or multiple base monitors at our clients environment.

Problem: Not all client base monitors are connected to the internet or opening an extra network port is a hard thing to get done. This makes it harder to setup alert notifications from that base monitor.

Desired solution: Send notification from the parent/central base monitor. This way we only have to set up notification on one central base monitor instead of multiple and use various notification types.

  14. Group sql server instances at the instance level, not at the server/cluster level

I would like to control the group that an individual sql server instance is in, rather then having to group things at the server/cluster level. The group views and control over alerting is great, but in the event that the same cluster/server hosts a dev and production instance, or multiple instances that are managed by different members of a DBA team, the usefulness really suffers.

  16. Enable extended events per server

Currently, enabling the use of extended events is a global setting.

It would be great if this could be enabled per server, to avoid well-documented issues (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2878139/fix-using-dbghelp-dll-version-4-0-5-error-is-logged-in-sql-server-2012) between extended events and older versions of SQL Server (namely SQL 2008 which is still in extended support until 2019)

  17. Longest queries which are running on each server.

Right now we are getting only 4 queries. Also, if we check Database, these are only the system databases, Actual databases are not considered here.
Our requirement is to get the Longest queries which are running on each server. After getting these details performance optimisation team is going to check those queries and try to optimise them. Can we get these details?

  18. The ability to exclude nodes in a cluster I don't want to monitor.

When a cluster spans regions I want to be able to only monitor my "active" region and note my "passive/DR" region.

If my primary region fails I would like to switch over my licenses to the other region in SQL Monitor so that I retain my license count.

  20. Ability to not monitor/show certain queries in the TOP 50 list.

The top 50 query view in SQL monitor is showing the query that is running on the service broker queue with explicit waitfor statement. In our server these waitfor is 5 min and we have 100 threads that runs for 5 minute and wait for the messages in the queue.
The query monitor shows these query as the top slow performing queries, but in reality these are not slow queries, they are just waiting for messages in the queue. We need a way to not show up the queries in top 50 list, so the queries that are actually slow…
