1. Customized Alerts

   Hi,

   Can we get a report which shows top 10 databases by growth over a certain period of time, across all the monitored SQL instances?

   There should be one graph which shows top 10 databases by growth, gathering data from all the databases scattered across multiple SQL instances, rather than multiple graphs showing top 10 databases by growth.

   It would be nice to have so that we can determine what databases do we need to focus on.

2. Support 3rd party HA tools such as DxEnterprise

   3rd party HA tools such as DxEnterprise allow for failover of a virtual host (VHOST) from one Server (virtual or physical) to another in the event something happens to the VHOST. In the failover process, it will pull all of the associated disks along with the VHOST to the new machine it is going to be hosted on. If RedGate SQL Monitor is configured to monitor the physical server, things work well until you need to fail over. Then you get alerts of disk changing from 20% free to 0 bytes free and the failed-over SQL instance(s) are no longer being monitored.
   The alternate configuration is to set up redgate to monitor the VHOST. This works a lot better for monitoring the SQL instance after failover, but results in disk drives and SQL instances appearing in duplicate when more than 1 VHOST exists on a server. For example, if we have our reporting instance on VHOST reports and our SSIS on VHOST ssis both hosted on physical machine PM1 and we notice that the report server is using up a lot of memory and causing delayed with SSIS package execution, we may choose to fail ssis over during the busy reporting times to PM2. SQL Monitor will freak out if we do that though telling us that ALL of the VHOSTS on PM1 suddenly lost the associated disk for that and we will get alerts that are not valid.
   While we could turn off the low disk alerts, having them off means we won't get ANY low disk alerts which is a problem as well.
   The other problem is if ssis and reports are both on PM1 and ssis has a 20 GB S drive, because both vhosts have the same drive letter and GUID, the SQL Monitor reports show that the S drive has 40 GB which is not accurate.
   I am not sure of a good solution to supporting a tool like DxEnterprise would be, but my initial thoughts are to have the configuration for the disk monitoring and instance monitoring be more configurable and selective. For example, I may only want to monitor disk S on ssis but not monitor disk S on reports. And some disks I don't want to monitor at all as they are managed by the IT department (C drive, page file drive, etc).

   The short version of this suggestion is to have more user control over what SQL Monitor monitors.

3. Add 2017 CU14 to Estate view

   Currently SQL Monitor shows the latest SQL Server 2017 version to be CU13 yet the latest is CU14. This should show the latest version.

4. DatabaseName custom message parameter addition for Custom Webhook messages

   I would like to share with the developers the alerts for the different databases we have in the same server instance. I noticed for custom webhook messages. It looks like the option was there (like monitoredEntity.azureSqlDatabaseName).

5. On the Overview screen, collapse AlwaysOn clusters into a single tile

   I have quite a few AlwaysOn groups, with 3 servers as part of the group. SQL Monitor very cleverly takes the cluster name and adds all 3 servers to the monitoring list ... HOWEVER, on the Overview screen, they show as individual servers. It would be good if I could collapse that all down into one tile that shows an overall health of the group. I realize this is a different situation from an FCI because there can be multiple 'active' nodes, but it would be good if SQL Monitor understood that I added an AG listener server list and then just gave me a single tile that might be 'drillable' down into the servers that show. Either that or allow me to set a filter on my profile that shows only active machines in any AG groups on the Overview screen.

6. Exclude tempdb/ReportServerTempDB from Alerts at a GLOBAL level, WITH EASE

   It makes no sense for there to be Alert configuration settings for tempdb for Consistency Checks, Backups, and any other irrelevance.

   If the ONLY reason for the existence of SSRS databases is because of Microsoft's idiotic requirement for SSRS to actually be configured in 2014 before permitting an in-place upgrade to 2016, there is no ACTUAL reason why one would care two hoots about the state of either SSRS DB on ANY instance affected by this "demand". OK, I have just 21 instances to drill down to SHUT UP ABOUT SSRS DATABASES!

   Please provide a better way to manage SYSTEM databases (I do not regard SSRS databases as "real" USER databases, despite SQL's classification as such). I need global settings that apply to standard SQL-named databases, not the current drill down every instance paradigm that is significantly man-effort-wasteful.

7. Add AND/OR conditions for disk alerts

   We are using SQL Monitor to monitor disks and we also send these disk alerts to our NOC(24/7 monitor team) and when they receives an alert they are calling us on our On-Call service when outside office hours.

   The alerts are not always relevant as the alert can be like for example:
   Disk free space less than 5 % but actual space left is 300 GB, which is more than enough and no alert and phone call had to be triggered.

   We are trying to set custom disk alerts but as we have 1000+ disk alerts to configure it’s impossible to configure all of them.

   It would be great if we could be able to create custom disk alerts using Conditions.
   An example of what we would like to be able to add to SQL Monitor --> Disk Space Alert:
   Disk free space < 5 % AND < 100 GB = Alert Yes
   Disk free space < 5 % AND > 100 GB = Alert No

   CONTEXT: Some alert types such as Long-running queries, Job Failure or Error Log Entries can trigger very frequently under certain circumstances.

   PROBLEM: This causes a large number of alert emails to be sent, and the only way to ascetain that all these alerts are the same is to view the details screen for all of them.

   EXAMPLE SOLUTIONS
   • Group similar alerts in the alert inbox
   • Raise alerts not on individual events, but on these events happening a specified number of times
   • Mention identifying information sooner: e.g. directly in the alert inbox
   • Suppress query-based alerts for specific databases (e.g. deadlocking 3rd party vendor databases)
   • Have a "quick config" workflow that exludes the current lot of similar alerts without us having to write any regular expressions or other complicated config mechanisms
   • When an alert configuration is applied, provide the option to close affected alerts.

9. Extend field width of Server Selector field on top of Dashboard to be the same width as the Drop Down

   Go to Dashboard; Overview tab; drill down to one of the servers. On top of this next form (Server Host Metrics form) is the Server Selector field with a Drop Down list box. When you select the down arrow key to open the List Box the width of the List box is about twice the width of the Server Selector field. Is it possible to make the width of the Selector field the same as the drop down or make it user defined/variable? Right now it's around 27 chars. We have long server aliases/names so if extended, it will help our users. Thks.

10. Job step failure - trigger an alert, even if the job itself doesn't fail

    CONTEXT: If job step "On failure action" is set to "Go to next step" or "Go to step xy...." and the step fails, we would like to be alerted. The alert should be triggered immediately (as opposed to at the end of the job).

    PROBLEM: SQL Monitor "Job failed" alert doesn't alert in such cases.

    EXAMPLE SOLUTIONS:
    • A new alert.
    • Expanding options on the "Job failed" alert.

12. Backup overdue alert - RegEx filter

    I have many non-production databases on production SQL Instance, that make no sense to backup. I know I can turn this alert off one by one on each database. RegEx filter by database name would be help.

14. We would like to send slack messages to different channels depending on the server.

    We have multiple teams who are ultimately interested in what is wrong with their platform, The posting to a single slack channel is good, however giving an option to send only messages from certain servers to specific channels would improve our customer engagement. currently the main channel is ignored by the all teams except the dba's as the chaff from other servers can cause disinterest, or interest when no reason for a team to investigate.

15. Suspend Monitoring of Individual Cluster Nodes

    Alert suppression windows can be applied to groups, clusters, instances, and machines - including individual cluster nodes. Howerer it seems it is only possible to suspend monitoring for instnaces or clusters not individual nodes,

    We recently had a hardware fault and it would have been helpful to suspned monitoring of a specific node whislt the engineer resolved the fault.

16. Set Maintenance Window by Group

    We do maintenance by class of server (DEV, QA PRD) and update an entire group during one maintenance window. It would be nice to be able to select a group like "Production" and set one maintenance window instead of setting it for each server. And since we do maintenance on the second Sunday for one group and the third Sunday for another we can't set a window and forget it. We have to set it before the weekend there will be work done and then clear it on the following Monday. More scheduling flexibility would be a wonderful addition.

17. "Installed Versions" tab needs to be aware of GDR updates

    Only Service Packs and Cumulative Updates are currently included in the version list maintained by Redgate, which drives the "Installed Versions" tab. GDR updates are not included.

    In my estate, this has resulted in SQL Server 2012 SP4 installations showing as being fully up to date, when there is a GDR update from January available, to address Meltdown/Spectre.

    Microsoft's official line on GDR updates for SQL Server is:

    "A GDR addresses an issue that has a broad customer impact, that has security implications, or that has both. A GDR is determined and issued by Microsoft as appropriate and when appropriate. GDRs are kept to a minimum."

    They're also abandoning Service Packs for SQL Server from 2017 onwards and releasing only CU and GDR:

18. Add scheduling for monitoring suspension and resumption

    Using Azure SQL Database in serverless mode with an auto-pause is a useful feature to save money when the db is not in use. SQL Monitor keeps the db from sleeping overnight.

    Suggest addition of scheduling for Suspend/Resume operations, similar to alert suppression scheduling.

    Hi, you should be able to use the SQL Monitor API (see https://documentation.red-gate.com/sm/api) to schedule suspending/resuming monitoring for your Azure SQL Databases.

19. Show current data sizes on purging page

    On the data purging page would it be possible to show for each of the data categories how much space each one is currently occupying.

    Possibly even an 'oldest date' too? As this may be pertinent if the purge thresholds haven't yet been met.

    On some environments I want to keep as much SQL Monitor data as possible and if it's a healthy server you may have very little alert data, and so want to keep more history than you do say, machine data.

    It would also help in cases where the Repository database is growing, and you're not sure which type of data is responsible.

20. Apply filters to more SQL Server alerts

    In configuring Long Running Query, I'm able to specify a filter on the process name (e.g. wanted to exclude my "Barracuda" backup processes - and did so successfully). I'd like to do the same for other Alerts such as Deadlocks and Blocking Processes.
