Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. Provide Managed identity as an Authentication Method to the Redgate Azure SQL DB

Support for using the managed identity of the Webserver/Applicationserver VM to authenticate over the AAD on the Azure SQL Redgate Database.

-> Maybe also Support for Azure App Service which has built-in this functionality?

  2. Job failing Alert option for number of consecutive failures in a row

I have some SQL Agent jobs that run every 2 minutes and legitimately fail occasionally to circumstances outside our control.
I need to be alerted if the job is constantly failing, e.g. failed 5 times in a row, but I do not care about one off failures.

Having a customisable option for individual jobs to alert only after X consecutive failures would be fantastic.

  4. contained

Add support for Contained Availability Groups (CAG) in SQL Server 2022
This is actually a feature that broke with the new version. There is no ability to monitor SQL Agent Jobs.

  5. Customize email alert recurrence to receive it more often

Have an option to change how often I want the email alerts to come. Let's say I want to track the alert for every, and I mean every, SQL job failure. Everytime a job fails, even when I intentionally fail it, I want to receive a mail.

  6. Add DTU, CPU, DATA I/O, Log I/O to grids 'Top Queries', 'Tracked Queries', 'Top Waits'

On each of the Top Queries, Tracked Queries and Top Waits grids a way to customize the columns to show metrics for DTU, CPU, DATA I/O, Log I/O

  8. Ignore Selected Procedures in Top Procedures Grid

In the Top Procedures grid, a checkbox for toggle if the stored procedure in the row is one that you would want to ignore and not examine for any metrics during that or any given time

  9. To add on - able to save the metric of baseline in 'Analysis' page by showing different metric graph with their own baseline

I think this idea is useful for metric comparison with the baseline. Currently, user need to select the metric every single time login into the page. This config could not be saved.

  10. be able to add individual machines instead of an entire cluster

Right now when adding a node to Redgate Monitor and if it's part of a cluster, the entire cluster is added (even when switching off the auto-discovery of the clustername as this is only applied to the name itself).
Especially with large cluster estates, it's not possible to add a single node instead of the entire cluster.
This has impact on licenses, as the entire cluster needs to be licensed instead of each individual node that you actually want monitoring for.

  11. In AzureSQL, I would like Redgate Monitor to not "keep awake" systems which are set to "sleep".

Within AzureSQL you can set SQL Servers to be Serverless and also to "sleep after" a time window. This means you can save money for systems which are not heavily used.
I think Redgate Monitor needs to have a "light touch" mode for such systems where it will firstly check the config and say "ok, this server is asleep, I dont need to look at it" before reporting maybe in the infomration status "system asleep". When the system wakes up, it should monitor as normal.
This is a cost saving exercise since, after adding Redgate to our Legacy AzureSQL servers,…

  12. Add field 'Description' to Powershell module manifest

Currently it is not possible to redistribute the powershell module to an internal nuget powershell repository, because the field 'Description' is missing in the psd1 file.
At the moment we need to add this field and sign the module again before publishing it to our internal nuget feed.

    implicit conversion,
    scans,
lookups and the index that didn't have the columns include
    missing indexes
    Parameter sniffing
    etc...

  15. Be able to see in the overviews panel how much RAM my monitored instances are consuming just like I can see CPU and Disk IO for example.

I want to monitor how much RAM my instances are consuming while I'm in the overviews panel and even though I can go to a specific panel for checking this specific counter it'd be useful to havr it in the single overviews panel and not moving back and forth.

  16. see the meaning of the alert in the email alert going out as it shows in the description on the dashboard inside the dashboard

This will provide more context at what the alert means without going into the dashboard (web) page.

  17. Customized Alerts

    Hi,

Can we get a report which shows top 10 databases by growth over a certain period of time, across all the monitored SQL instances?

There should be one graph which shows top 10 databases by growth, gathering data from all the databases scattered across multiple SQL instances, rather than multiple graphs showing top 10 databases by growth.

It would be nice to have so that we can determine what databases do we need to focus on.

    Thanks,
    Hammad

  18. Long Running Query Alert - Update Process Fragment Info for Agent Jobs with SSIS Packages

One of the most common alerts that we get is the Long Running Query alert. However, when the query is due to a package executing from an agent job, there is little to no information about what is running long. The attached image is an excerpt from one of the alerts we got this morning. We can tell it is from an executing job, because of the SSISDB database specified. But beyond that, we are left trying to figure out which job/package was the culprit by digging through execution logs and schedules, then trying to match execution lengths with where…

  19. Just like you can configure multiple alert thresholds for: JOB DURATION UNUSUAL ALERT you should be able to do so for: JOB FAILING ALERT

This would allow notifications for failed jobs to be sent to different functional recipient(s) (e.g. Dev vs. Support vs. Ops teams) based on key words and other criteria.

  20. blocked by (number)

This should be easy to implement..

    "blocked by [some number]"
If available show the security context/or username associated to the session number.

It would be a time saver, and enable me to react or ignore faster
