Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate SQL Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve SQL Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on SQL Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — often the SQL Monitor team will initially stay quiet about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the SQL Monitor forum.

  3. Requirement of more reports as described below

    Can have the following reports

1)fragmentation level of the indexes in all the databases in all the servers .It can be tabular format with each of the current information as column and all servers and its info as row

    2) Server summary for all the servers (in a table format )

    3) Replication status of all the servers in the estate

    4) Permission of users in dbs in all the SQL Instance

    5) To see the compliance level based on a CU or patch for all the servers . It is more like I can choose a CU or patch…

  4. Ignore Negative Custom Metric Collection

I am trying to add a custom metric based on the sys.dmosperformance_counters DMV. These are very useful for gaining Instance Level information. These counters increment as each lock is requested. I have used the “Use a calculated rate of change between collections” option which accurately depicts the graph I am trying to accomplish. The caveat is that these counters are reset to 0 when the instance is restarted. Therefore in any of my graphs, I get this huge negative value. This basically renders the metric useless because I cannot visualize any metrics once a server is rebooted.

    Is…

  5. It would be nice to be able to exclude names of databases to be backed up instead of un clicking them one at a time .

It would be nice to be able to exclude names of databases to be backed up instead of un clicking them one at a time .
This should be similar to the long running queries where you have the option to exclude.

  7. Add a Description field in the Databases section

Dashboard, drill down to the Databases Screen. In that section, there are currently 4 fields or columns - Name, Availability, Transactions/sec, Database size. Will it be possible to add another string field to store a high level description of the database; this will be really useful for our users. Can the new field comes after the name, be 200-300 characters in length and can be a pop-up if a mouse pointer hovers over it. Many thanks.

  8. have the ability to customize browser tab labels

Provide the ability to label browser tabs to indicate contents, such as "Host101 Disk Activity" or "Host102 Database Transactions" or "Host103 Disk Usage"

  10. enhance Title on Analysis Graph Page with "machine metrics"; "machine name"; (all)

Simply add to existing title with the selection of dropdown boxes as "machine metrics"; "machine name"; (all).

So we don't need to scroll down or include the bottom boxes to know which machine and options are being displayed...

  12. Just like you can configure multiple alert thresholds for: JOB DURATION UNUSUAL ALERT you should be able to do so for: JOB FAILING ALERT

This would allow notifications for failed jobs to be sent to different functional recipient(s) (e.g. Dev vs. Support vs. Ops teams) based on key words and other criteria.

  13. MONITORING ERROR (SQL SERVER DATA COLLECTION) more infromation

Is it possible to list the items that failed in the alert?

In the description for this alert it notes that one or more of the following connection methods failed:
    WMI
Remote registry (PerfMon and registry access)
Remote file access is not set up (hidden administrative shares should be enabled)
    SQL connectivity

Is it possible to note in the alert details which one failed? It would make troubleshooting after the fact a bit easier.

  14. Display parameter list in the query plan form

It would be great to be able to see the parameter list from the query plan in the "Query Plan" form without having to download the plan and traversing the XML file.

It would save time troubleshooting problematic queries.

  15. Auto hide Menu and Filter bar

When in TV/Overview mode (dashboard), It would be nice to get the full real estate on the TV/Monitor to show as many server tiles as posible, hence auto hiding the top menu and filter bar. with a dropdown button (show button) on the top right side of the server tile area. (shown in the image associated).

  16. add the table schema to alerts

On that alert (fragmented index), you see a table name. It would be helpful to see the schema to which that table belongs.

    Medium Fragmented indexes

  17. use alternate IP addresses for named instances

I am modifying my named instances to use separate IP addresses. This allows me to use CNAMES for each databases, We are then able to move the databases around to another instance without the customers having to modify their connection strings. We are also able to use port 1433 for all existences. SQL monitor tries to connect to the instance using the servername\SQLINSTANCE, which no longer works remotely suite to each instance having it's own IP Address using and alternate A-RECORD name.

  18. For Installed Version doesn't show the patching details of the active and passive node of FCI

For Installed Version doesn't show the patching details of the passive node of FCI
So if cluster has 3 nodes, you should one line for each
this will be very helpful if we have missed out on patching inany node then the SQL Monitor can high light this to us

  20. Collect SQLServer:Memory Manager counters.

This would be especially useful for SQL 2012 where counters have been removed from the buffer manager exist in the memory manager counters. For SQL Server 2012, I have observed that there is a memory leak and this is revealed by observing the Memory Manager Optimizer Memory (KB) counter.

    Daniel Rothig responded

Hi, we’re monitoring a few of those out of the box and the rest can be covered via the custom metrics feature – check out sys.dm_os_performance_counters
