Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

In Redgate Monitor, I want to...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.

  1. Add AND/OR conditions for disk alerts

    We are using SQL Monitor to monitor disks and we also send these disk alerts to our NOC(24/7 monitor team) and when they receives an alert they are calling us on our On-Call service when outside office hours.

    The alerts are not always relevant as the alert can be like for example:
    Disk free space less than 5 % but actual space left is 300 GB, which is more than enough and no alert and phone call had to be triggered.

    We are trying to set custom disk alerts but as we have 1000+ disk alerts to configure it’s impossible…

  2. be be able to send alerts to multiple Slack channels

    At present I can only use one Slack channel for SQL Monitor. I'd like to be able to specify a channel per alert - for example I have a custom alert and it would be good to be able to send a message to a designated Slack channel

  3. Estate Backup Emailed Report

    I really like the new backup feature in the estate section; however, I would love to have this emailed on a scheduled basis. If the email could have a graph like the first sheet and the spreadsheet attached, it would be great.

  4. Monitor Windows 2012 R2 CSV Volumes (Cluster Share Volumes IO/space and other metrics)

    CSV Volumes have their own windows performance counters and can be used by resources owned by any of the Windows Cluster

  5. list, and get alerts from the SQL Monitor API.

    Add possibility to list, and get alerts from the SQL Monitor API.

    This so we more easily can share and distribute alerts to a users that shouldn't have access to SQL Monitor.

    In my org we have a lot of developers, and a lot of different databases that are hosted on the same clusters, I want the possibility to send more direct alerts and messages to these users.

  6. ssis

    SQL Monitor currently does not monitor the execution of SSIS Packages.

    It would be extremely useful if SQL Monitor would monitor the execution of the SSIS packages like it does the execution of SQL Jobs

    E.g.

    Alert if the SSIS Package Execution Fails
    Alert if the SSIS Package is taking longer than normal to Execution
    Alert if the SSIS Package fails to start

  7. Select and store a static baseline for future reference

    CONTEXT: When comparing server performance over longer periods of time or across deployments, the baseline functionality in SQL Monitor's analysis section is useful.

    PROBLEM: SQL Monitor creates a dynamic baseline based on previous data. While this baseline is a realistic idea of what's "normal" it requires us to keep a lot of data in SQL Monitor

    EXAMPLE SOLUTIONS:
    • Aggregate data in SQL Monitor so that it can be retained for longer without using much space
    • Allow us to "freeze" a baseline so that the data doesn't get deleted.

  9. Add development machines without a license.

    You should be able to add development machines at no additional cost if you already have a production license. If you do not have a license for the development instance then the features can be scaled back to only allow you to view alerts.

  10. Re-fire alert notification if alert stays active

    My initial problem was that an alert that was still active was marked as cleared, but I wanted the alert to 're-appear' as essentially it hadn't been fixed.

    This then led me to thinking about any alerts that can move from Active to Ended. It would be useful to configure these is such a way that if they stay Active for a given period, then they re-fire. I understand that is what the multiple thresholds can be used for (especially if the thresholds define time periods) but in this case I may already be at High, there is no further…

    in other monitoring tools (Idera) i can see active sql connections and they are doing. i also have a option to kill the process if i decide. dose your product have this ability

  12. Group instances, not servers

    For example: when I have a database cluster running multiple instances I would want have the possibility to put one instance in a development group and another instance from that same cluster in a different group. In this way managing alert settings etc on a group level becomes much more convenient.

    Provide AAD authentication mode to connect to Azure SQL server apart from username and password authentication.

    Because if Azure SQL is set to AAD authentication only for security reasons in any organization, username and password to add new Azure SQL server/DB under SQL Monitoring doesn't help.

  14. allow more configuration options for the 'Job duration unusual' alert

    The 'Job duration unusual' alert is based off of the last ten runs of a job. I think allowing a configurable number of runs to be a baseline or better yet, the last x runs at the same time of day would be ideal.

  15. Create alert on items in Analysis Graph

    The ability to create an alert metric around data which is currently being collected for the Analysis graphs. E.g. Being able to alert when the BufferPagerLifeExpectancy drops below a certain amount.

  17. Alert on long I/O operation

    Hosting Company raised an alert that there is absolutely no trace of as an issue according to SQL Monitor:

    ALERT NAME: Rackspace - SQL I/O Error
    TIME: 6/22/2011 7:02:21 PM
    REASON:
    Event Description: SQL Server has encountered 174 occurrence(s) of I/O requests taking longer than 15 seconds to complete on file [M:\xcp_trans.mdf] in database [xcp_trans] (5). The OS file handle is 0x0000000000000BBC. The offset of the latest long I/O is: 0x000023b6d20000
    SEVERITY: CRITICAL

    Please augment SQL Monitor to do the equivalent alerting.

  18. Central configuration of child base monitors from the parent/central base monitor

    Context: We have a base monitor at our office connected to one or multiple base monitors at our clients environment.

    Problem: To configure the base monitor at our clients location, we need to connect to that base monitor. In order for us to reach that base monitor we have a to connect through multiple VPN's and steppingstones, which makes a simple click a time consuming action for us.

    Desired solution: We want to be able to configure a child base monitor from our central base monitor at our office. For example adding a member tot a group or check on…

    We will soon be exploring how to make it easier to configure multiple base monitors.

  19. The ability to exclude nodes in a cluster I don't want to monitor.

    When a cluster spans regions I want to be able to only monitor my "active" region and note my "passive/DR" region.

    If my primary region fails I would like to switch over my licenses to the other region in SQL Monitor so that I retain my license count.

  20. Have audible alerts on SQL Monitor

    It would be very helpful to have a configuration setting to make alerts audible (something like a beep or alarm ring). In the office we have a screen that displays the SQL Monitor where the alerts are only noticed when people look at the screen, which is not very often.

    An audible alert of 'red' alerts would prompt us to action them straight the way.
