Suggestions
Welcome to the Redgate SQL Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve SQL Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.
This is the easiest way to make an impact on SQL Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.
To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:
- Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
- If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
- Give us as much context as possible
- Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
- Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — often the SQL Monitor team will initially stay quiet about new suggestions to see what you have to say!
If you have any questions visit the SQL Monitor forum.

Run a custom SQL script when an alert is raised
We use SQL monitor very heavily for our SQL and application monitoring, what we would like is for each alert to be able to define a custom sql script to run when the alert is raised, the output of this sql should be included in the alert.
This would allow us to do things like capture whoisactive when blocking occurs or other application specific things and make responding to alerts MUCH easier.

Specify a "details" query for custom metric
When I define a custom metric it would be super-helpful to be able to see some details that gave rise to the metric value. For example, I have one for "count of failed SQL logins in the last 10 mins". But to find out which logins failed, I have to go run queries in SSMS.
I'd like to be able to define a "details" query on the custom metric, the results of which are captured at time of collection, and are then available from the alert.

Configure Different Emails for alert levels
Allow for customization of emails for alerts at each alert level, so that I can send to different emails for each alert level.
So that I can send High alerts to one email address, medium alerts to another email address, etc…

Add an option to schedule when custom metrics run against a given database.
Currently when a custom metric is executed can only be controlled by the frequency (daily, hourly, etc).
My primary purpose is for daily. I would like to schedule the time of day a daily metric is run per database, or at least server. The custom metrics I pull back are time sensitive so controlling when the metric is returned is a must.
A more advanced option to this would be going beyond simply choosing the time of day for daily runs, but rather the ability to build a custom schedule of run times. An example might be Custom Metric A…

SQL instances which are part of Availability Group does show if it primary or secondary in Global Dashboard
When SQL instances which are in Availability Groups are being monitored, the global dashboard lists both the primary & secondary node.
However though it does have 'AG' badge but it does not say which is primary or secondary.
While looking at the SQL monitor it will key that we know upfront which is the primary instance and also when alerting it should say primary or secondary in the subject line.46 votes -
Exclude specific alerts from SQL SERVER ERROR LOG ENTRY alerts
We have certain tools (mainly infosec related) that generate a lot of entries in the SQL server error log as part of their normal operation creating a lot of alerts. The only way to identify these and thereby determine that they are 'expected' is to go into each alert individually and mark it as read. The ability to ignore certain errors based on error number, severity or message would add a lot of value to this feature.

Thanks for this suggestion and the additional comments and votes.
Version 9.0.13 released on 23rd May now allows you to exclude specific SQL Server Error Log Entry alerts by severity, error number and error message.
We hope this meets requirements and will mark it as completed, but please add other suggestions for any further improvements you would like to see.
Thanks,

Add AND/OR conditions for disk alerts
We are using SQL Monitor to monitor disks and we also send these disk alerts to our NOC(24/7 monitor team) and when they receives an alert they are calling us on our On-Call service when outside office hours.
The alerts are not always relevant as the alert can be like for example:
Disk free space less than 5 % but actual space left is 300 GB, which is more than enough and no alert and phone call had to be triggered. We are trying to set custom disk alerts but as we have 1000+ disk alerts to configure it’s impossible…

Show a log of query activity
CONTEXT: When investigating a performance issue, I want to know what has been running
PROBLEM: SQL Monitor has rich query information on the overview screens, the performance diagnostics panels, and the query alerts, and the query trace in alert detail reports, but it's difficult to tie that information together
EXAMPLE SOLUTIONS:
- Implement a query log
- Show query information on the analysis graph43 votes -
Alert when SQL Monitor is having a problem.
We have the SQL Monitor database located on a different server from the Base and Web Service. We had an instance where the SQL Server hosting the SQL Monitor database went down. When that server went down it failed to send us an alerts and we didn't know that SQL Monitor was having no problems as it wasn't sending out any email alerts to notify us that it couldn't connect to it's database. A nice fix would be to have SQL Monitor send an alert to notify us that it can't do it's job.

list, and get alerts from the SQL Monitor API.
Add possibility to list, and get alerts from the SQL Monitor API.
This so we more easily can share and distribute alerts to a users that shouldn't have access to SQL Monitor.
In my org we have a lot of developers, and a lot of different databases that are hosted on the same clusters, I want the possibility to send more direct alerts and messages to these users.

exclude all of my system databases from the log backup alert
I would like to exclude all of my system databases from the log backup overdue alert as I only perform daily full backups on them. At the moment I have to go into the Config settings and change the alert to disabled for those DBs on each servers.

When we’ll be improving the alert configuration UI, we’ll keep that use case in mind

Select and store a static baseline for future reference
CONTEXT: When comparing server performance over longer periods of time or across deployments, the baseline functionality in SQL Monitor's analysis section is useful.
PROBLEM: SQL Monitor creates a dynamic baseline based on previous data. While this baseline is a realistic idea of what's "normal" it requires us to keep a lot of data in SQL Monitor
EXAMPLE SOLUTIONS:
• Aggregate data in SQL Monitor so that it can be retained for longer without using much space
• Allow us to "freeze" a baseline so that the data doesn't get deleted. What do you think about these solutions? Got another idea?…

ssis
SQL Monitor currently does not monitor the execution of SSIS Packages.
It would be extremely useful if SQL Monitor would monitor the execution of the SSIS packages like it does the execution of SQL Jobs
E.g.
Alert if the SSIS Package Execution Fails
Alert if the SSIS Package is taking longer than normal to Execution
Alert if the SSIS Package fails to start40 votes -

Estate Backup Emailed Report
I really like the new backup feature in the estate section; however, I would love to have this emailed on a scheduled basis. If the email could have a graph like the first sheet and the spreadsheet attached, it would be great.
