Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. Monitor MySQL Database Instance on Windows Server hosts

https://sqlmonitor.uservoice.com/forums/91743-suggestions?query=Monitor%20MySQL%20Databases%20on%20Windows%20Server%20hostsCouldn't see it anywhere but Monitoring MySQL\MariaDB Database on a Windows Server Host is something is in development or on your roadmap?

I work in the Social Housing sector (Not for Profit) and just about every other housing association we collaborate with use applications running off a MySQL back end - hosted on a windows server.

These database back ends (along with the application) are primarily supported by ISV vendor - but they actively encourage us to monitor the database. We already have already…

  7. Want to monitor SingleStore Databases

As part of our infrastructure, we utilize SingleStore databases, and we would greatly benefit from monitoring capabilities within your platform. Given its MySQL-based architecture, we believe incorporating SingleStore monitoring into RedGate’s suite would enhance visibility, optimize performance tracking, and streamline database operations.

We kindly request that you consider adding SingleStore database monitoring at the earliest opportunity.

  9. monitor dedicated sql pool databases.

SQL Monitor need support for Azure Dedicated SQL Pool databases (Synapse, Azure Parallell Data warehouse). Some basic metrics like available DWU's, running queries, top resource hogs etc.

  11. Monitor an application server

You can already monitor a 'host' machine which does not host any SQL Server instances, but it would be nice if we could also monitor application log locations, services etc.

Maybe Custom Metrics which can use something other than t-sql?

  12. Monitoring of Windows Server Failover Cluster

We would like to have the option to monitor Windows Server Failover Clusters as an integrated part of SQL Monitor. Considering that over 50% of our infrastructure is implemented as Always On High Availability Groups, operating on WSFC, we would like to have monitoring and alerts if something on WSFC level goes wrong such as a node disconnecting, a File Share Witness going down, errors reported in the WSFC console etc... At the moment, if something happens at WSFC, such as loosing quorum due to a file share witness going down, we are not being alerted and will…

  13. Exclude serverless databases from monitoring

Need the ability to exclude serverless databases from scanning. The purpose of using serverless is to suspend when not in use, drastically reducing costs. Currently these databases are "kept awake" by SQL Monitor and never go to sleep. This is a deal-breaker for use on some of our servers...

  15. Install SQL Monitor without needing to provision a (large) SQL Server database

CONTEXT: One challenge with installing SQL Monitor is that we need to provide a connection to a SQL Server database.

PROBLEM: This can be costly or complicated. It would be better if SQL Monitor had an alternative backend.

    EXAMPLE SOLUTIONS:
    • Offer a hosted data store
    • Automatically deploy a free backend alternative such as mongoDB or PostgreSQL
    • Reduce data collection so that SQL Express can be used for small deployments
    • Provide greater granularity over data retention policies

What do you think about these solutions? Got another idea? Let us know in the comments!

  16. Monitor an Azure SQL Database geo-replicated secondary database

We have geo-replication set up for many of our production databases, and we have some processes and users that use that for executing read-only queries. We have alerts set up in Azure Monitor for simple things like when CPU % exceeds 95% for more than 2 minutes. We would like to use Redgate Monitor to identify the workload that is causing that (Top SQL). However, when we try to add the secondary server, Redgate Monitor cannot find any databases in it.

  18. Add ability to monitor mongodb hosted on Windows

Add the ability to monitor mongodb instances hosted on Windows - currently only Linux selfhosted mongodb instances are supported.

I suppose this will not be a very popular suggestion because most organisations are hosting mongo on Linux, but for the few that do - like us - it'd be very nice to have.

I would expect this one would be easy to implement as there already is a need to enter Windows credentials for monitoring when adding SQL Server hosted on Windows.

  19. Monitor if all SQL Server related Windows services are running, especially Redgate SQL Backup Agent.

I have found that backup jobs fail, due to SQL Backup service not running. Knowing that the service has stopped would be a great metric to have. This could then be extended to monitor other Windows services.

  20. Alert when SQL Monitor is having a problem.

We have the SQL Monitor database located on a different server from the Base and Web Service. We had an instance where the SQL Server hosting the SQL Monitor database went down. When that server went down it failed to send us an alerts and we didn't know that SQL Monitor was having no problems as it wasn't sending out any email alerts to notify us that it couldn't connect to it's database. A nice fix would be to have SQL Monitor send an alert to notify us that it can't do it's job.

This can be set-up using the 'Send base monitor error emails to' field within the Email notification settings (see attached). SQL Monitor will send error emails to this email address if a base monitor experiences an error.
