Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. Indicator that an active backup is ongoing on card

Have some kind of indicator an active backup/restore header is ongoing, card or icon pulsating, shaded etc. This is handy to see at a glance if too many backups are going at once.

  3. I would like to do some custom filters of 'Alerts raised or updated in the last:'.

I would like to do some custom filters of 'Alerts raised or updated in the last:'. AND also be able to do range filters for them eg 2am to 6pm.

We are 24/7 DBAs at a big bank in South Africa and we want to be able to see whats alerts came through our individual shifts.

  4. update alerts

When you go into an alert, would it be possible to have a button that can fire off and get the current value as it is now. For example, the attached was raised but may not get picked up for whatever reason until the Monday, if I could refresh the values that would be great as an index main task may have happened between the alert and when I get to it. Hope that makes sense?

  5. "Index searches/sec"

Why in SQL Server metrics there is no “Index searches/sec”.
In your description for “Full scan/sec”, you mention “The ratio of Index searches/sec to Full scans/sec should generally be no more than 1000:1.”.

It would be very useful to have this counter without having to go through performance monitor under windows

  6. Monitor SQL Server running on AHV hosts

Whilst you have added the ability to monitor vmware hosts, I would like to be able to monitor other virtualization technologies. E.g. AHV (Nutanix)

  7. Show Job name instead of ID in query related alerts

    This is a follow-up on: https://sqlmonitor.uservoice.com/forums/91743-suggestions/suggestions/1865305-show-job-name-not-job-id-value-for-job-related-ale

The job ID was replaced by the job name in Job Failing, Job Duration, Job Cancelled alerts but I would like to see the same for query related alerts, specifically Long-Running query but the comments in the other item also mention Block Process and Deadlocks.

  8. Utilize SQL (or SQL-like) statements in filters.

Utilize SQL (or SQL-like) statements in the filters, specifically on the Overview tab to filter on server name. For example: '%sql%' AND '%prod%'
Currently you can only do 1 fuzzy logic search. Also, you cannot search just by one character.

  9. Customize Estate Version Thresholds

On the estate tab, it would be nice to customize the thresholds that define the yellow and red state. For example, a server behind on one CU might be yellow, but others red.

  10. Custom disk alerts in a cluster is lost when instance is moved to a new host

We often use customized disk alerts for larger disks i.e. instead of using the default alerts we might configure a High alert at 200 GB and a medium at 250 GB.

These custom alerts is not set on the instance level so when we move the instance to a new host the custom alerts will not follow the instance and the alert has to be set up again.

As our largest cluster is 9 node cluster with 23 instances and 3 disk each this cause us to configure these alerts at a maximum of 621 instead of 69 times. That…

  11. See the last X weeks of User transactions/SQl statments ran on the server

Have a view in SQlMonitor that can be used to do a quick search on what querys a user has run on SQL Server over the last X weeks.
For our user case we would just need the data for the last two weeks but sure if storage allows user's would like to hold the data for longer.
This is to enable some auditing functionalty to quickly find what a user has ran for reporting.
    e.g.
    What did user1 run yesterday,
What was run and by who over the last hour

This could also help with finding performance issues. For…

  13. Raise an Event Alert when a database is dropped

There is currently no alert when a database is dropped or detached from a server. SQL Monitor should create an Event alert to record when the drop happened. Obviously this might be intentional (e.g. the alert you have now that records a database is offline), but it might be accidental or unknown to the DB team (E.g. a vendor drops their database).

Because it will (hopefully) be an intentional action, and quite probably no plan to ever re-attach the database, the alert should be an event alert rather than a normal alert (the normal alert would never end)

    A similar…

  14. Job Duration Unusual: Threshold higher than 100%

Currently when configuring different threshold in the "Job Duration Unusual" alert we are limited to a maximum of 100% of the baseline. So for example if I wanted an High alert when a job is 5 times the baseline it's not currently possible, I'm limited to 2x.

  15. Find Queries / Stored Procs whose Performance has Decreased Over Time

In preparation for changing the database compatibility level for our primary database to 2014, we would like to see which queries and stored procedures are performing poorly after the switch is made in the staging environment. While I can do this to a limited extent by looking at top queries in Red Gate Monitoring, I was wondering if there was an automated way to alert on this. For example, alert on any stored procedures / queries that appear in the top 100 costliest queries by duration / CPU usage, whose average duration / CPU usage has more than doubled since…

  17. see Lock Escalations/sec as available metric in analysis graph

The customizable analysis graph does not include the option to display Lock Escalations/Sec (\SQLServer:Access Methods\Table Lock Escalations/sec). I like to compare this to baseline to regression-test releases. In conjunction with waits\locks, it can also warn the user that an index is no longer being used (as would happen if Entity Framework began searching a varchar column for an nvarchar value).

  18. show client host name for queries in top SQL

In the TOP SQL, I see login and program name, but not client host name. It would be helpful to see the client host name, too.

  19. Estate Backup Emailed Report

I really like the new backup feature in the estate section; however, I would love to have this emailed on a scheduled basis. If the email could have a graph like the first sheet and the spreadsheet attached, it would be great.
