Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. Dashboard view for multi-instance environment

We have multi-instance SQL Server on one VM.
Today on dashboard we have waits for instance, and we need processor usage for instance also.

We would prefer to have on tile:
    1. Waits for instance
    2. Procesor for instance
    3. Disk i/o for instance

We should have also tile which grup all instances into machine. On machine tile we shoul have the same information as for instance but measuers would count machine indicators.

There would be also great if You would add new dashboard view for multi instance environment.

My proposal for view in atachment (I am not a professional…

  2. monitor dedicated sql pool databases.

SQL Monitor need support for Azure Dedicated SQL Pool databases (Synapse, Azure Parallell Data warehouse). Some basic metrics like available DWU's, running queries, top resource hogs etc.

  4. see username and hostname in "top 50 queries" and "top 10 waits"

In SQL Monitor, I want to see username and hostname in "top 50 queries" and "top 10 waits"

Please add username and hostname in "top 50 queries" and "top 10 waits." These two columns will be useful to trouble shoot SQLs that are causing troubles
    Thanks,

  6. Add a process that automatically checks to see if a stand-alone SQL Instance has become an Always-On Availability Group

There is a stand-alone SQL Instance that is being successfully monitored by SQL Monitor.

The SQL Instance importance has increased and the SQL Instance becomes an Always-On Availability Group. This change is not detected by SQL Monitor.

The work around is to remove the SQL Instance from being monitored and re-add, the SQL Instance for monitoring so that the change is detected.

Add a process that automatically checks to see if a stand-alone SQL Instance has become an Always-On Availability Group or has been removed from a Availability group to become a stand-alone instance once again.

  7. Remove "Configure alert" link from alert emails

This is a big issue for me because I send Job Failure alert emails to the development team, but I don't want different people configuring alerts on Redgate Monitor. Only DBA's can make changes to the monitoring configuration.

I don't think the "View full alert details" is necessary either. If developers need to see more information, they can look at the Job History.

  8. add data from past to a custom metric

Since data at the current point in time is still being processed and takes about a minute and a half to complete its way around the system a way to add a data point from a few minutes ago for example would be very advantageous.

As a work around currently the metrics all do a
    where utc_date between
    dateadd(minute,-3,convert(smalldatetime,getutcdate()))
    and dateadd(minute,-2,convert(smalldatetime,getutcdate()))

but this means that the data is always two minutes out when compared to the actual raw data

  10. Attach Custom Documentation To Alerts

I'd like to be able to customize things like an alert that job X has failed with a link to our own documentation on how to troubleshoot that job. It would be even better if these links could carry forwards into the slack notifications but even just having them on the alert page in SQL monitor for that particular alert would be immensely useful.

  11. Add link to disk details on Server details page.

From the Estate - Disk Usage tab we can select the specific drive to get usage details for that disk.
When you navigate to a server from the Overview there is a section that shows the Disk Usage at a high level, but no links to drill into the specific disk.

  12. Send alert notifications at the central/parent base monitor

Context: We have a base monitor at our office connected to one or multiple base monitors at our clients environment.

Problem: Not all client base monitors are connected to the internet or opening an extra network port is a hard thing to get done. This makes it harder to setup alert notifications from that base monitor.

Desired solution: Send notification from the parent/central base monitor. This way we only have to set up notification on one central base monitor instead of multiple and use various notification types.

  13. Central configuration of child base monitors from the parent/central base monitor

Context: We have a base monitor at our office connected to one or multiple base monitors at our clients environment.

Problem: To configure the base monitor at our clients location, we need to connect to that base monitor. In order for us to reach that base monitor we have a to connect through multiple VPN's and steppingstones, which makes a simple click a time consuming action for us.

Desired solution: We want to be able to configure a child base monitor from our central base monitor at our office. For example adding a member tot a group or check on…

We will soon be exploring how to make it easier to configure multiple base monitors.

  14. Add Active/Ended as SELECT drop-down options for Events

The current Alerts page Select drop-down has None/All/Read/Unread

For events, such as Disk Space, being able to Select "Ended" to get rid of the noise, helps focus on what needs to be addressed.

If the list doesn't have any Event-type row, don't offer this pair of options.

We’ll look into this. In the meantime you can set-up a custom filter for Active or Ended events and use the ‘Select All’ to select these rows.

  16. Improve filters available for alerts

A recent incident I have been working on revealed to me that filters work based on last update which makes it hard to find alerts that you know would have started around a specific time. The ability to filter on start/end times as well as show this information in view returned.

  17. Avg. lock wait time alert

Be able to have the Avg. lock wait time metric as a configurable alert.

this metric is already available in the analysis tab, but we can't define alert on it.

    Avg. lock wait time
The average wait time (in milliseconds) for each lock that could not be satisfied immediately and had to wait for resources.

Equivalent PerfMon counter: SQLServer:Locks - Average Wait Time (ms)

  18. Provide a report on queries with suggestions on improving performance

When viewing the top 10 queries, we can see suggestions on what may improve the performance for the specific query. Can this functionality be summarized in one report per database to suggest and what indexes could assist with improving performance.

    I would like to see:
SQL Query, Query statistics, Query plan, Suggestion(s)

(similar to top 10 but more extensive.)

Also provide searching capability to look for any suggestion that relates to a specific object.

This will assist DBAs to specifically drill into a specific issue query and provide instant suggestions on what can be done to improve performance for that…

  19. Be able to see and dissect alerts for deadlocks on the AWS RDS platform.

Currently, SQL Monitor does not raise deadlock alerts for AWS RDS database instances. I'd like this functionality to be added, as it's a major feature and selling point for the product.

The current workaround we're using is a combination of AWS performance insights and a SQL script. A "single pane of glass" would be much more efficient.

  20. have more flexibility with user permissions.

I'd like to be able to customize permissions. For instance, I would like an AD group to have the ability to set and remove alert suppressions (operational) but not have admin access to the monitor (administrative).
