Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. Monitor SQL Server Analysis Services

It would be really nice if we could monitor SSAS Instances with the SQL Monitor.

  2. Integrate query store with monitor to find regressed queries

Query store already tracks regressed queries. Integrating this into the monitor and having the ability to alert on this would be extremely useful in having early notifications on when a query goes bad before application or system issues come up

  3. Have ability to configure alerts to be active for various periods.

I have multiple alerts (including custom alerts) on serves. I would like to configure alerts to have different thresholds for diffident periods (weekday/ weekend) OR (mornings / evenings ) OR other periods.

Like log sizes on weekends (mostly due to index maintenance) can be much higher than weekdays.

Current "alert suppression windows " applies to a host and to all alerts on it and not to specific list of alerts.

  4. sql estate email out option

It would be great if you could set up an email routine to email out reports from the Estate tab. E.g. the backups tab would be useful to email out an export of the screen.

  5. Add filtering to the Top 10 Queries/Waits lists

So first, this is a request for more general filtering than the 2 requests I see already exist for filtering by database (which I believe you can get to by clicking the database name further down the page, but would certainly be more convenient on the top 10 lists directly).

The primary use case that I was looking to do but couldn't was sort by averages, but set a minimum execution count. The goal being to find my worst queries that are not just one off things that aren't likely to be repeated. I think there would be a LOT…

  6. Have the option to capture parameters from queries

Presumably this would require having the trace enabled and you wouldn't necessarily want to be capturing every parameter on every query so there probably needs to be some logic around choosing what to keep. This would obviously help track down parameter sniffing problems along with other troubleshooting of the exact scenario you are trying to look at.

This is different from the suggestion listed here:
    https://sqlmonitor.uservoice.com/forums/91743-suggestions/suggestions/41237467-display-parameter-list-in-the-query-plan-form

(And that one should also be implemented and would be a valuable time saver)

  8. network adapter name on overview page

Currently network adapters' interface description is shown on the overview page of a monitored server. i am not interested of that information really, I would see the net adapter name as Get-NetAdapter cmdlet returns. So, Name should be there instead of the description.

  9. ERRORLOG tab on Alerts

When we are viewing an alert, it would be nice to have a view into the ERRORLOG at that point in time. If we could have the option of adding an ERRORLOG tab under the Performance Data section on each alert, that would be handy.

  10. Add a Description field in the Databases section

Dashboard, drill down to the Databases Screen. In that section, there are currently 4 fields or columns - Name, Availability, Transactions/sec, Database size. Will it be possible to add another string field to store a high level description of the database; this will be really useful for our users. Can the new field comes after the name, be 200-300 characters in length and can be a pop-up if a mouse pointer hovers over it. Many thanks.

  12. Under Estate section: display last date/time server and/or instances on each server were restarted

I want to know what SQL Server Services are running/stopped on each server and be able to alerted if said servers are stopped.

  13. Easily identify which base monitor is hosting a monitored SQL Server host

In a multi-base monitor configuration it is a bit cumbersome to identify which base monitor is hosting a given entry on the overview page. Yes, one can search all the SQL Server host machines on each base host, but that takes time. It would be better to have an entry in overviews that identifies where it is hosted.

  14. Have a way to exclude Deadlock alerts based on the T-SQL or Proc name

I would like to exclude alerts for deadlocks based on a procedure name or other T-SQL, just like I can do for LRQ and other alerts. Please see http://productsupport.red-gate.com/hc/requests/170766

  15. show sql related windows event log entries

Rather than going through all Windows event log entries looking for SQL related events on every monitored server, it would be good to have them displayed on the server screen along with the SQL Error log entries.

  17. Extend field width of Server Selector field on top of Dashboard to be the same width as the Drop Down

Go to Dashboard; Overview tab; drill down to one of the servers. On top of this next form (Server Host Metrics form) is the Server Selector field with a Drop Down list box. When you select the down arrow key to open the List Box the width of the List box is about twice the width of the Server Selector field. Is it possible to make the width of the Selector field the same as the drop down or make it user defined/variable? Right now it's around 27 chars. We have long server aliases/names so if extended, it will help…

  18. Clear Select Alerts from Dashboard when ended

I'd like the ability to close alerts from the Latest Alert board if they are ended. A checkbox in Alert Configuration to self-close alerts once Ended would be good to have
Eg: I have certain 5-minute jobs that fail once a day if their corresponding run completes I'd like the Alert to clear itself.

I can configure the Alert Ended to send email notification stating its ended but it still stays active on the Alerts list in SQL Monitor.

  19. Monitor Azure SQL Read Scale-out Database

I would like to monitor the Read Scale-out Azure SQL DB that gets created when on Business Critical tier.
We are moving our Read queries to this database using "ApplicationIntent=ReadOnly" specified in the connection string. SQL Monitor allows to configure the primary for monitoring but provides no options to add a connection string when adding a server so am unable to add the secondary read-only DB for monitoring.

  20. Record queries terminated by the client

We use an ADO client with a query timeout of 30s by default.

These queries are not being captured by SQL Monitor. If they were, it might highlight the cause of why they are taking so long.

For context, we have a query that regularly takes a couple of seconds to execute, but every hour or so exceeds the 30s timeout and we would really benefit from SQL Monitor to capture those to help diagnose why.
