Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. Notification Profiles

It would be nice to have different notification profiles. For example, I'd like to have a notification profile for business hours vs. after hours.
For business hours, I'd like to be notified when certain alerts happen, but during after hours, I would only like to know about if there is a system down issues.

It would be nice to have some kind of alert escalation system like this. So if I want certain alerts to alert me only when the High threshold has been reached after hours, but any other alerts during business hours.

  2. Long Running Query Duration for Specific Queries

It would be really useful is this feature came into Live!

We have a number of queries that run on our SQL servers. We are aware these normally run for a long period of time (5-10 minutes) and do not want to exclude these from being alerted to us. Rather than changing the Long Running Query threshold for all the queries within the server we would like to be able to do it for these specific queries that take that little bit longer than others.

  3. scroll through the overview graph and zoom in/out

It would be a lot easier if we could scroll through the overview graph and zoom in/out. For instance, on Monday morning I need to inspect a long (2 to 3 day) ETL job with 4 main parts. Currently I have to select the last timestamp I like to see in the graph and then select "Last 2 days". Then I can drag the sliders to highlight the area I want to investigate.

It would be easier to click the graph and drag it left/right and use the mouse wheel to zoom in/out

  4. I would like to be able to export/import all of my custom metrics that i have configured in my SQL Monitor. Is this at all possible?

We are migrating our SQL Monitor to a new server and i would like to avoid having to manually recreate all the custom metrics we have configured. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

  5. Search SQL Monitor Long Running Query Alerts By User Running Query

It would be very useful to search the Long Running Query alerts for a user? The alert text that is displayed in the GUI and in the alert emails list the user running the query. I have Monitor set up to only send the alert emails for my HIGH category. But, when I want to do analysis or documentation, I would love to find all of the alerts Low, Med or High, that are attributed to a specific user or a group of users. Is that possible? To filter the list in the UI to only show alerts from a…

  6. The ability to exclude nodes in a cluster I don't want to monitor.

When a cluster spans regions I want to be able to only monitor my "active" region and note my "passive/DR" region.

If my primary region fails I would like to switch over my licenses to the other region in SQL Monitor so that I retain my license count.

  7. Alerts to be automatically marked as cleared after 'X' days

Have an option so alerts can be automatically marked as cleared after a variable amount of days.
This would prevent us from manually clearing them down.

  8. Improve alert troubleshooting by showing sql server error log

When viewing an alert it may be helpful to see the error log for the server for the surrounding time. RAISERROR can log to the error log, so this info could be useful to see.

Looking at the information recorded for top 10 queries I cant see a recorded date as to when query ran. Is it recoded somewhere if so how can i see it . If it is not why not. trying to track down who ran a query is very hard without a timestamp or username as to who ran it

  10. Show Job Description in Job Alerts

I'd like to see the job description in job alerts. We use this field in sql server to add notes about what the job does, who to inform on failure and rerun steps.

  11. Customize the Alert page Columns

Due to the lack of any useful actual time-zone date-time presentation in the UI (I still have issues because of the SEVEN I have to deal with), kindly allow us to add columns to the Alerts page.

Specifically, I MUST HAVE the Group designation. This is the way I group by time-zone. When looking down the All Servers list, because there are always alerts across all the zones, having the "time-zone" right before the "Object" makes handling the busy list much easier than having to wait for each node's page to render, especially as the Alert Page performance has been…

  13. Share alerts via Email

The ability to share alerts details via Email from the "Alert Details" page.

Sometimes we don't want to share a direct link to the monitor.

    E.G
Click "share" which will open a mailto: with the relevant alert details.

  14. Identify and alert on heap fragmentation

Currently SQL Monitor does not have a way to identify and alert on heap fragmentation. I suggest you add this to the product.

I know having a heap is usually a bad idea and that heap maintenance is a pain (rebuilding a heap also rebuilds all the nonclustered indexes on it, SQL Server doesn't release a page of a heap table, and doesn't use free space in previously used pages unless you are doing deletes with TABLOCK hints), but there are some valid use cases for heaps.

  15. Manually rerun a metric

When an alert pops up, after I fix the problem, I want to refresh the metric to ensure that it was fixed. There's no way to tell how often the data is refreshed.

  16. Identify which Virtual Host a server is on

In our environment we have a number of different virtual hosts and clusters on which our servers are hosted. It would be quite useful if the SQL server summary information showed the name of the host and cluster on which it is being hosted. As well if host and cluster name could be displayed somehow on the analysis graphs that would be great.

  17. Trigger Self Healing Script and Auto Close

It would be great if SQL Monitor could invoke a SQL script upon an alert threshold being crossed and then take action within itself (ie. clear itself, notify a team, etc) based on the value returned (0/1) or default to an action if there is an issue with the script execution.

This type of functionality would help administrators have a first line of defense before truly getting paged on an alert such as a drive filling (perhaps you have txt files you can purge or shrink logs (though I don't necessarily condone this, but you get the idea!)

  18. Customized Alerts

    Hi,

Can we get a report which shows top 10 databases by growth over a certain period of time, across all the monitored SQL instances?

There should be one graph which shows top 10 databases by growth, gathering data from all the databases scattered across multiple SQL instances, rather than multiple graphs showing top 10 databases by growth.

It would be nice to have so that we can determine what databases do we need to focus on.

    Thanks,
    Hammad

  19. Generate Notifications using a RESTful API Call

Considering the various ways that your customers may want to receive notifications, the ability to make calls to a RESTful API would be a big win.

  20. Apply filters to more SQL Server alerts

In configuring Long Running Query, I'm able to specify a filter on the process name (e.g. wanted to exclude my "Barracuda" backup processes - and did so successfully). I'd like to do the same for other Alerts such as Deadlocks and Blocking Processes.
