Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. Send alert notifications at the central/parent base monitor

Context: We have a base monitor at our office connected to one or multiple base monitors at our clients environment.

Problem: Not all client base monitors are connected to the internet or opening an extra network port is a hard thing to get done. This makes it harder to setup alert notifications from that base monitor.

Desired solution: Send notification from the parent/central base monitor. This way we only have to set up notification on one central base monitor instead of multiple and use various notification types.

  2. Webhook notification for Cleared events

We use Webhook notication to push the alerts to our central ITSM tool. The status "Raised" creates an entry, the status "Ended" deletes the entry in the third-party tool.

We would also like to be able to use the status "Cleared" to delete entries. For this, a webhook notification would also have to be triggered when the status changes to "Cleared", which is not yet the case.

  3. list, and get alerts from the SQL Monitor API.

Add possibility to list, and get alerts from the SQL Monitor API.

This so we more easily can share and distribute alerts to a users that shouldn't have access to SQL Monitor.

In my org we have a lot of developers, and a lot of different databases that are hosted on the same clusters, I want the possibility to send more direct alerts and messages to these users.

  4. custom RPO time

Custom RPO time. Have the ability to adjust the RPO to its values, for example 5 or 10 min. Not only 15minutes.

  5. Database name "like" filter for "Database Unavailable" alert

In our environment we have several systems (3rd party ETL/reporting packages) that create and drop databases as part of their normal operation.

Would be good if the "Database Unavailable" alert allowed configuring to ignore drops of database names either matching a "LIKE" filter or perhaps more advanced a regex filter.

  6. Alerts and Notifications Export

Would love to be able to export all notifications with details into Excel or CSV. Very beneficial to create dashboards, metrics and KPI for all notifications.

  8. Provide a report on queries with suggestions on improving performance

When viewing the top 10 queries, we can see suggestions on what may improve the performance for the specific query. Can this functionality be summarized in one report per database to suggest and what indexes could assist with improving performance.

    I would like to see:
SQL Query, Query statistics, Query plan, Suggestion(s)

(similar to top 10 but more extensive.)

Also provide searching capability to look for any suggestion that relates to a specific object.

This will assist DBAs to specifically drill into a specific issue query and provide instant suggestions on what can be done to improve performance for that…

  9. see username and hostname in "top 50 queries" and "top 10 waits"

In SQL Monitor, I want to see username and hostname in "top 50 queries" and "top 10 waits"

Please add username and hostname in "top 50 queries" and "top 10 waits." These two columns will be useful to trouble shoot SQLs that are causing troubles
    Thanks,

  10. Add Text Boxes/Areas to Reports

I have reports that I circulate from SQL Monitor. I have to edit these before I issue them to add additional information. E.g. Under the "Lock Waits/Sec" chart I have a description of what a "Lock Wait" is, what impact it has, what's an acceptable value, etc. I tried supplying a supplementary sheet with this info but the management team prefer it under each chart / metric.

  11. Reduce the suggestions on how to fix queries when viewing Top 10 Queries

SQL Monitor pops up the text "x issues with this query". Addressing them could improve performance. It then lists some things that might have an impact (e.g. select * instead of listing just the columns that are required) but also lists other things that won't change performance (e.g. not specifying a schema name).

Can this list be reduced to just what is potentially performance related? Maybe have a 2nd field for best practices if that's considered improtant.

  12. Remove "Configure alert" link from alert emails

This is a big issue for me because I send Job Failure alert emails to the development team, but I don't want different people configuring alerts on Redgate Monitor. Only DBA's can make changes to the monitoring configuration.

I don't think the "View full alert details" is necessary either. If developers need to see more information, they can look at the Job History.

  13. deadlock Detailed Report

Please create a detailed deadlock report.
In addition to the existing DeadLock summary report, can you please create a DeadLock Detailed report for all deadlocks for a given time range.
Looking for a DETAILED report of deadlocks (all deadlocks for the time range) that will include:
    1. Date / Time of the event
    2. Blocking SPID and full query text
    3. Duration of the block
    3. All Child or deadlock victim SPID and full query text of the victim
Similar to the summary report, will need to be able to select the SQL server instance and / or database to…

  14. monitor dedicated sql pool databases.

SQL Monitor need support for Azure Dedicated SQL Pool databases (Synapse, Azure Parallell Data warehouse). Some basic metrics like available DWU's, running queries, top resource hogs etc.

  16. Service Level Agreement Metric Report

The following contract metrics are common to many US Government clients. It would be very helpful (and a real time-saver) if SQL Monitor had report that could provide the below listed SLA's in a monthly email to an editable distribution. The report should be .pdf or .xlsx format, with layout intended to communicate to executive audiences. The setup for the report should allow comparing baseline dates. Thanks in advance for considering this idea.

    • List of database instances
    • Database uptime
    • Components that are reaching capacity
    • Computer resources growth
    • Reserve capacity
    • Throughput I/O

  17. We would like to send slack messages to different channels depending on the server.

We have multiple teams who are ultimately interested in what is wrong with their platform, The posting to a single slack channel is good, however giving an option to send only messages from certain servers to specific channels would improve our customer engagement. currently the main channel is ignored by the all teams except the dba's as the chaff from other servers can cause disinterest, or interest when no reason for a team to investigate.

  18. Ability to not monitor/show certain queries in the TOP 50 list.

The top 50 query view in SQL monitor is showing the query that is running on the service broker queue with explicit waitfor statement. In our server these waitfor is 5 min and we have 100 threads that runs for 5 minute and wait for the messages in the queue.
The query monitor shows these query as the top slow performing queries, but in reality these are not slow queries, they are just waiting for messages in the queue. We need a way to not show up the queries in top 50 list, so the queries that are actually slow…

  19. Attach Custom Documentation To Alerts

I'd like to be able to customize things like an alert that job X has failed with a link to our own documentation on how to troubleshoot that job. It would be even better if these links could carry forwards into the slack notifications but even just having them on the alert page in SQL monitor for that particular alert would be immensely useful.

  20. Monitoring of Windows Server Failover Cluster

We would like to have the option to monitor Windows Server Failover Clusters as an integrated part of SQL Monitor. Considering that over 50% of our infrastructure is implemented as Always On High Availability Groups, operating on WSFC, we would like to have monitoring and alerts if something on WSFC level goes wrong such as a node disconnecting, a File Share Witness going down, errors reported in the WSFC console etc... At the moment, if something happens at WSFC, such as loosing quorum due to a file share witness going down, we are not being alerted and will not know…
