Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — the Redgate Monitor team will often stay quiet initially about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. New Licensing for Azure SQL Databases

If you are going to start licensing by the number of Azure SQL Databases, at least provide the option of adding and removing databases from the Azure SQL Server.
I have three databases on one Azure SQL Server that are costing me licenses, however two are data warehouses and one is paused. If they are not being monitored, why am I being charged for a license?

    Thank you for this suggestion.

The ability to add/remove individual licenses for Azure SQL Databases has been implemented in version 8.0.22, released on 13th November.

We hope this meets your requirements and will mark this suggestion as completed, but please do let us know if you have any further feedback.

    Thanks,

  2. PLEASE PUT BACK THE OPTION TO SELECT MULTIPLE ALERTS

is anyone as frustrated as I am about the removal of selecting multiple alerts and adding a comment in one swoop?

At least make it an admin option so that it can be turned on or off

We are wasting so much time every day trying to clear alerts and it is unproductive

Thanks for letting us know this was important to your workflow.

Version 8.0.23 has now been released and includes the return of the ability to add comments to multiple alerts.

This was initially removed while developing the ability to group alerts, and it’s taken us longer than expected to reintroduce – apologies for the inconvenience this caused.

We hope this solves this suggestion so will mark it as completed.

  3. Comment multiple alerts at once

I would like the ability to add the same comment to all of my selected alerts before clearing them in the Alert Inbox.

  5. Have the ability to pin the left sidebar in the overview screen

It'd be great if we could pin the sidebar on the left-hand side of the screen on the overview section when looking at a particular server. As I'm looking over metrics I oven find myself hovering over that section then waiting for it to expand and collapse again. An example concept implementation that I think would work well is similar to how Microsoft implements basically that same functionality in their office suite (in particular off hand outlook is a great example). Really just being able to pin it in place I think would satisfy the entire issue for me as…

  6. "Installed Versions" tab needs to be aware of GDR updates

Only Service Packs and Cumulative Updates are currently included in the version list maintained by Redgate, which drives the "Installed Versions" tab. GDR updates are not included.

In my estate, this has resulted in SQL Server 2012 SP4 installations showing as being fully up to date, when there is a GDR update from January available, to address Meltdown/Spectre.

Microsoft's official line on GDR updates for SQL Server is:

"A GDR addresses an issue that has a broad customer impact, that has security implications, or that has both. A GDR is determined and issued by Microsoft as appropriate and when appropriate.…

    Hi, thanks for this suggestion.

We have added a button to the query plan that allows the full in-truncated text to be copied to clipboard.

We hope this improvement solves the suggestion so will mark it as completed. Please do let us know if you have any further feedback.

    Thanks,

  9. See last backup of each type in Overview page

Currently the backup section in a database on the overview page shows the backups that happened in the selected range, and it only shows the last backup of each type that happens. We have a database that does full backups once a week and then differentials.

It would be helpful at a glance to see the status of the last backup of each type regardless of if it happened in the time window or not. Maybe hide the last differential if it happened before the last full.

We have redesigned the Backups information to more clearly show the selected range it refers to, and also show when the last backups occurred prior to that. This can be seen in the latest version (8.0.25)

We hope this improvement completes the suggestion and will mark it as completed. Do let us know if you have any further feedback

  11. Dynamic Report names

It should be possible to have dynamic fields in the report name similar to the way Backup Pro implements backup names. So when the report is emailed the attachment could be easily saved without having to rename it.
    For example "MyReportsBaseName<YYYYMMDD><HH:MM>"

  12. Prompted for update to version 8.0.12 but website is a dead end

The "update" link in the SQL monitor console takes me to a "learn more" page with no link to an update EXE. I am referred to a zip file with a SQLBundle EXE which doesn't contain the Monitor, or an outdated version of SQL Monitor.

    Hi,

Thank you for reporting this, and apologies that you encountered it. We removed version 8.0.12 owing to a bug, and have since released 8.0.13.

I will close this suggestion, but if you require further assistance with this issue, please could you let us know using the support forum https://forum.red-gate.com/categories/sql-monitor-7

  13. Exclude databases with state = 1 (RESTORING) in page verification alert

    Thanks for this suggestion.

Version 9.0.4 has now been released and the Page Verification Alert will no longer alert when a database is being restored.

We hope this works as you expected and will mark this as complete, but please do let us know if you have any further comments.

  16. Overview database growth estimation

When planning new server we have to estimate how much space will be taken by database during life cycle of new SQL server and when SQL monitor watching server for us I would like to have possibility see following:

    • Database file size portion
    • Log File size portion and how much of that contain free space
    • Estimated growth (as information in Alert)
    • Summarized size per disk (if possible with how much space left)
    • Have this available as summary tile in the report, so I can reactive this info as email.

    Thanks and regards,

    //Radek

  17. TempDB unexpected growth

I think it would be a good idea to have information about what caused random sudden growth in tempdb. I know we can see the DB size chart but theres no way to know what caused it.

Information that would be nice to be captured:

    Table name
    What query created table
    What user created table

I'd like to see the occurrence of deadlocks over time, per database,...

  20. Job duration taking too long - triggering WHILE job is still running

CONTEXT: If a job is taking a long time (outside of some predefined threshold), we want to be alerted about it. That’s often an actionable alert – we could decide to stop the job, we could let the users know that report XY will be late as a consequence etc. One step further is being alerted on the job STEP level as well.

PROBLEM: Current alert “Job duration unusual” is triggered AFTER the job completes, if it meets the alert's criteria. We need an alert to trigger WHILE the job (or job step) is still running, but the criteria is…
