Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve Redgate Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on Redgate Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — often the SQL Monitor team will initially stay quiet about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the Redgate Monitor forum.

  1. Feasibility of selecting databases across the sql instances to create custom metrics

Imagine we are planning to create a new custom metric which we wish to use across several instances but one specific set of databases. its currently impossible and will be one to have.

  2. Have all cookies from the application marked as secure and HttpOnly

In a internal review of web-applications our riscmanament suggests that all webapplications cookies must be marked being secure and HttpOnly.

    Could that be possible?

  3. global dashboard should handle multi-level groupings

Currently the global dashboard presents the SQL instance tiles according to their top-level group. So if I have 3 servers grouped such as:

    App1

    Prod

    Svr1
    Dev
    Svr2
    App2
    Prod
    Svr3

it will present these under 2 groups: App1 and App2. This is fine if you're viewing all servers.

However when I filter the view to only show servers in the App1 group, I'd like the tiles to be grouped using the next level of grouping if there is one (in this case "Prod" and "Dev")

  5. Execution Time on Alert Dashboard.

In Alert Dashboard, Execution time helps to analyze long running query in priority,so it would help if execution time is displayed on Alert dashboard.

  6. Go to next alert once cleared

If you're clearing a few a alerts and need to review each one, it would be great if clicking cleared then loads the next alert.

  7. Apply regex rules to existing alerts

Filtering alerts with regex is great for new alerts but it would be better if we could confirm our new command work by running them on existing alerts. Either testing or just been able to the filter the events using custom regex expressions.

  9. Add option(s) for manual purging of data (use case: removed instances, deleted databases)

CONTEXT: When you remove a machine from monitoring in SQL Monitor / delete a database from an instance / rename a database... - data stays in the SQL Monitor database (e.g. machine/instance/database is still visible on the Analysis tab), at least until relevant monitoring data is purged.

PROBLEM: If you have some purge settings set to "do not purge", that data never goes away. Sometimes that is OK (you want the history retained), sometimes it's not (bloats the SQL Monitor database, unneeded entries on the Analysis page...).

    EXAMPLE SOLUTIONS:
Add options to manually (on demand) delete data for a chosen…

  12. Expand lower section of overview window

I would like the ability to expand the sections in the lower portion of the overview window or break them out into separate windows. For example, when viewing the Top 10 Queries or Waits it is very difficult because there is not enough room. Also because the individual tabs scroll separately from the main window, scrolling is a pain. The top graph section shrinks, but it still takes up too much screen area. Being able to break out in individual sections or expand them to fill the screen would be very helpful.

See attached screenshot for an example.

  13. Exclude queries from top 10 queries

I would like to be able to exclude specific queries from Top 10 Queries. We use SQLQueryNotificationService which means our top 10 queries based on duration are always showing these queries as they have a waitfor. I would like the ability to exclude items from the top 10 queries.

Typical query I would like to able to exclude:
    WAITFOR(RECEIVE TOP (1) messagetypename, conversationhandle, cast(messagebody AS XML) as message_body from [SqlQueryNotificationService-07e6439b-8276-45aa-963f-bed011b3ef2f]), TIMEOUT @p2

  14. remember

Remember time period in overview of an instance or change the default from 24 hours. I tend to look at the overview of an instance using the last 6 hours however every time I click down in the overview I have to change from last 24 hours to last 6 hours, this is very frustrating. I would like to be able to remember my last setting or at least be able to change the default for me as a user.

  15. Alerts in SERVER Time Zone, NOT Browser!

Back in June 2016, I added the following to the now-defunct "Previous version" SQL Monitor Forum. The responder said it was in the Q for the next sprint, no promises as to its inclusion. DISAPPOINTMENT/FRUSTRATION continues to be experienced 6 MONTHS later!

Alerts at SERVER time, NOT UTC! PLEASE!

For the love of all DBA's with servers in multiple time zones (yes, this happens), for goodness sake STOP emailing the time of the Alert based on the SQL Monitor's Regional Settings.

In 2016, this statement from the page at https://documentation.red-gate.com/display/SM5/Alerts, is nigh on unbelievable, "All alert times in SQL…

View all running queries against a specific database with the details of the query and its duration.

  18. Specify a "details" query for custom metric

When I define a custom metric it would be super-helpful to be able to see some details that gave rise to the metric value. For example, I have one for "count of failed SQL logins in the last 10 mins". But to find out which logins failed, I have to go run queries in SSMS.

I'd like to be able to define a "details" query on the custom metric, the results of which are captured at time of collection, and are then available from the alert.

  19. Monitor Azure SQL DWH

It'd be great to be able to monitor performance of queries on Azure SQL DWH, as there are a number of DMV's available to track usage. Also, the ability to see on the Dashboard what DWU level the Azure DWH instance is running on would raise value and awareness of the cost of it, at that point.
