Suggestions

Welcome to the Redgate SQL Monitor feature suggestions list. Tell us how we can improve SQL Monitor by voting on these suggestions or by submitting your own ideas.

This is the easiest way to make an impact on SQL Monitor’s roadmap. Check out the completed suggestions to see how your ideas have influenced us in the past. Please note that this list is one of multiple sources that drive our development, meaning that we will not always implement the highest-ranking suggestions.

To give your idea the greatest possible impact, please follow these guidelines:

  • Describe the goal you’re trying to accomplish, rather than a specific solution to get there
  • If you have a favoured solution, add it as a comment to your suggestion
  • Give us as much context as possible
  • Only make one suggestion per post. If you have multiple ideas, submit them in separate posts
  • Comment and vote on existing posts to develop the ideas — often the SQL Monitor team will initially stay quiet about new suggestions to see what you have to say!

If you have any questions visit the SQL Monitor forum.

In SQL Monitor, I want to...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Allow users to specify the time period in minutes for the top 10 expensive queries

I would like to specify that exact minutes on the slider for Top Queries. Currently you can only do a 15-minute change. But I would like to be able to do that down to a minute range. Sometimes we make a change and I don't want to wait 15 minutes to filter out the previous queries.

  2. Add a summary tile for deployments to a database

I'd like to see a summary tile for deployments to a database by SQL Compare and SQL Change Automation.
Also it would be good if alerts can be created for these events.

  3. Report from Primary server in HA Group, even after failover

In a High Availability Group we have reports configured against the Primary server. When there is a failover, the reports should still be against Primary but are no longer, so need to be edited. Ideally, we should have reports that are always running against Primary, even when it switches to another server.

  5. Show when a Windows/SQL patch was applied

The current SQL Estate Monitor will show activity for a specific server and has the ability to show when code for example was deployed. I mentioned at the recent SQL in the City in London that it would be good to see any kind of patching that had been applied to that server as well. Get quick eyes on anomalies after a windows update or SQL patch.

  6. Search for SPID for specific Date and Time

I would be a good idea to have a functionality in SQL Monitor to search for SPID for specific Date and time. This will help us to review what query run by who on given date and time.

  10. Add option to make Reports public - i.e. available without having to log in

..so that i can add a publicly (internally..) available all-in-one dashboard view to my NOC TV screens, presenting all relevant information at a glance!

  12. Show login or user in the Top 10 Queries

Include login or user id information in the Top 10 Queries. This could help identify if a user is running an ad-hoc query.

  13. Change unable to connect error messages to include DNS issues

Added a server via IP address as it's in a remote DC, test ran fine. After clicking Add to monitor the server, SQL Monitor resolved the IP to the cluster name, and attempted to add the 2 cluster servers via name (which is great, much easier to recognise servers via name than remember the IP), however SQL Monitor failed to connect, with WMI errors, RPC Server unavailable etc.
These errors were misleading, as the real reason it wouldn't connect is that the server couldn't resolve the DNS names. Adding them to Hosts file sorted it straight away.
    Connecting should attempt…

  14. Have the ability to pin the left sidebar in the overview screen

It'd be great if we could pin the sidebar on the left-hand side of the screen on the overview section when looking at a particular server. As I'm looking over metrics I oven find myself hovering over that section then waiting for it to expand and collapse again. An example concept implementation that I think would work well is similar to how Microsoft implements basically that same functionality in their office suite (in particular off hand outlook is a great example). Really just being able to pin it in place I think would satisfy the entire issue for me as…

  16. on the overview, monitored instances be able to choose which groups to show

It is possible to choose one or all groups on the monitored instances overview. I would like to be able to select more than one group to show or deselect some groups that I do not want to see.

  17. see sessions from sys.dm_exec_requests in top 10 queries

I never see commands like BACKUP DATABASE or ALTER INDEX in top 10 queries and got the message from support that the information is taken from sys.dm_exec_query_stats
As it is now it is hard to track down where heavy I/O comes from if it is for example index maintenance or backup.
I think RedGate should record all commands from sys.dm_exec_requests and join in the execution plans where they exist and other stats if needed

  18. Monitor entity framework queries

as the query generated by entity framework are different, we need a way to monito the queries and group them in a similar bucket

  19. export metrics data to csv (or table) with configurable granularity and option to get cumulative data

The analysis page allows exporting data to csv for a certain metric, e.g., a database counter, but we cannot control the granularity nor whether data for all databases should be cumulative or not.

I would like to get data with the granularity produced by the 15 minute time range, i.e. seconds, but for a larger date range and preferably cumulative for all databases or a set of databases.

  20. handle case insensitivity with regex

We can configure some alerts to be ignored based on names/objects that are matched using reguler expressions.
Regex is case sensitive, but to avoid having to put all possible combinations in the regex boxes, could that be handled internally by SQL Monitor - for example by uppercasing (or lowercasing) all text before comparing?
